Collect & Freeze
Increase the sperm viability
Here at ICSB Florida, we freeze in pellets. According to the American Kennel Club's study from 1971-1979, freezing in pellets increases the sperm viability. According to the study, pelletized canine semen was 20-60% higher than in the straw method.
Straw Method:
- 73-85% success rate. Results ranged based on the size of the straw
- Often produces smaller litters
Pellet Method:
- 93% success rate when using pellets surgically with proper progesterone tests
- Averages normal size litters
When freezing pellets, a full semen evaluation and count is completed once the semen is collected, prior to being frozen. The vials of pellets are stored in liquid nitrogen tanks that are checked multiple times a week to prevent any issues from occurring.
